Eleven girls who have voliinteored for service will leave Ashburton on Monday tef commence training at- a military camp.

A New Zealand Expeditionary Force casualty list issued last night reported one man died as the result, of an accident, one previously, missing ana wounded now presumed dead, two missing and remaining on wounded list and one wounded. There were no Canterbury men on the list.

The hoys’ sports of the Ashburton High, School, which were postponed from last Tuesday until to-day on account of the unsatisfactory weather, have again been postponed because of the wet condition of the ground at the Domain. If conditions are favourable they will he held next Tuesday.

A mine was found on the Ruapuko Beach, 10 miles south of Raglan, by Mr Wallace. Thompson, a farmer, of Ruapuke. The mine was" 3ft 6in m diameter. One side was encrusted with barnacles, while on the other a number of the horns were showing. The discovery was reported to Hamilton by the local police and the Navy Department took charge.

The Health Camp Committee, which met yesterday, decided not to hold the annual health camp at Methven in the coming summer. The meeting had been adjourned from last week to enable inquiries to be made whether sufficient staff would be available. It was discovered that the cook whose services had been obtained for the last two years was not available, there would bo difficulty in obtaining girl helpers, and that the usual nurse, was also not available

The extent of the exemption of coal miners from the Homo Guard was explained yesterday by the Hon. A. McLagan, Minister of Industrial Manpower. He said that with the authority of the Adjutant-General of the forces (Brigadier A. E. Conway), there was; a temporary arrangement enabling miners to bo exempted from attending particular parades, but they were not exempted from service in the Homo Guard, and where they desired to do so they were entitled to attend parades. —P.A.

The Dominion executive of the Returned Services’ Association has issued a statement deploring that the observance of Anzac Day as a day of memorial should become a bargaining point in award negotiations before the Arbitration Court. The executive points out that some awards of the Arbitration Court provide that when Anzac Day falls on a Sunday, and Monday, April 26, is also a holiday, then Anzac Day shall bo observed on April 27. This will happen next year, when Faster Monday is April 26.—P.A.

The. sum of £707 toward the Ashburton National Savings quota (£882) was in hand at 2 o’clock this afternoon.

A meeting of the creditors of H. A. Mclnnes, woolbuyer, of Tinwald, will be held at Ashburton on Friday, October 16.

A total of £O7 18s 6d has been collected at St. Andrew’s Church in an annual appeal for Christchurch Presbyterian orphanages.

This point was raised at a recent meeting of the executive of the New Zealand Educational Institute anch senior officers of the Education reply it was stated that instructions had been issued by the department, after consultation with the National Service Department, that a teacher’s first responsibility was to see the chidren home safely. Only, after this had been accomplished shoidd a teacher join his unit. If teachers were being instructed to report immediately to the Home Guard or an Emergency Precautions Services unit, the matter should be represented to the Education. Board.
