FIFTY YEARS SYNE.\ (From the “Guardian,” Oct. 7. 1892.) Death of Tennyson.—'Lord Tennyson died at 1.30 this morning. Many inquiries by Royalty and persons of rank at Home and abroad were made during Lord Tennyson’s illness. Swimming Club.—The annual meeting of the Ashburton Amateur Swimming Club took place on Wednesday night. The report congratulated the members upon, the rapid strides which had been made during the last, year in membership and in providing accommodation at the bath and in sport. Concrete Streets.—The Ashburton Borough Council met last evening, when a. letter in connection with street construction was received from the Auckland City Engineer (Mr W. E. Bush). Mr Bush wrote that he anticipated using concrete extensively in the paving of streets. The Mayor said he did not think concrete could be used in Ashburton streets until after the water and sewerage pipes had been installed. Mr said that according to American figures it would cost £2600 to lay a, mile of street 18 feet wide, or 5s a square yard. They, had also to remember that in America tiie very latest appliances were in, use. The letter was referred to the Works Cbmmittee for a report.
