Samples of new season’s produce have been coming in more freely during the week. They include wheat, Carton and Algerian oats, and Italian and perennial ryegrass. The first few samples of wheat from light land were not attractive, but some of those offered from heavier land districts are bright and plump. The price for this season’s wheat is the same as last year’s—os 9d f.0.b., March basis, an initial payment of os Gd, and 3d at the end of the year. With settled weather, there will be a lot of crop in process of heading in North Canterbury next week. The showery weather has delayed the harvest, but it has very materially improved the crop. Early deliveries of perennial ryegrass were light in weight, running between 231 b and 241 b a bushel, but some heavy samples, running up to 271 b, have come in since. Some of the crop missed the benefit of the rains in the spring, and it is these that are light in weight. Quotations are from 3s 3d to 3s 9d, on tracks, sacks extra. Italian ryegrass samples have generally been light. Quotations are from 3s 3d to 3s 9d for good seed, ..with cases of less for indifferent quality and slightly more for particularly good samples. Both (parton and Algerian oats are being offered. Cartons are limited by the- price fixation to 3s 4d a bushel on trucks, and sales have taken place at this figure. Algerians are quoted at 2s 6d to 2s 9d. There have been no Duns offered so far, hut for heavy black quality 3s 3d is mentioned. Nb samples of Akaroa cocksfoot have been offered, hut some roadside samples have come to hand. Seed from this source is of good weight, ranging from 131 b to 151 b. There is no inquiry or speculation m the potato market. Merchants are generally awaiting a pronouncement from the Government on a ceiling price. SOUTH CANTERBURY. 3 .: TTMARTT, This Day. Grass seed, rape, and odd linos of oats aro now coming to hand on the South Canterbury produce market, hut it will be a week or ten days before any wheat comes to hand. Prices for wheat to the end of March will be: Tuscan 5s 6d, Hunters 5s Bd, aiid Velvet 5s lOd a bushel. Prices will probably be arranged for Garton oats for milling purposes. Algerians are quoted at 2s 6d a bushel, and dark Duns at 3s 6d. No. 1 Partridge peas remain at Gs a jbushel. There is a small demand for g.b.o.s. chaff at £3 17s Gd a ton on trucks. White potatoes are quoted at £7 a ton on trucks, with Suttons at £7 10s a ton. There is a fair demand for permanent pasture ryegrass and white clover. Nominal quotations are: Mother ryegrass m.d. 9s a bushel, permanent pasture 8s Gd, uncertified f.d. 3s Gd, Italian ryegrass certified m.d. 7s Gd, uncertified f.d. 3s 6d, 'white clover export quality 2s 3d per lb.

DUNEDIN. DUNEDIN, Jan. 23. The weather continues variable, and unless warm weather comes the oversupply of moisture may affect yields. It is stated that the new season s Algerians have been purchased at 2s 10d a bushel on trucks. Last year a

price order fixed the price of white oats at 3s lid f.0.b.5.i., and the order is still in force. That being so, it is difficult to understand why linos of white oats are being sold forward at a considerably higher figure than 3s lid. Business in the wholesale seed markets cannot be said to have yet commenced for the new year. It is reported that some of the crops have been seriously affected by stormy weather.

New potatoes have had a ready sale at the fixed wholesale price of 2sxl per lh, with the retail figure at 3id. It appears that under the age-old system of supply and demand prices will have to l ease as consignments have accumulated in the marts and are in excess of the demand.
