ENVELOPE APPEAL.

The first details ©f results of the Christmas Day patriotic envelope appeal are supplied by the honorary Dominion organiser, ATajov Bell, who says that, as small amounts are still being sent in, the figures are not final, but can lie taken as a fair indication. The amount notified from 18 postal centres is approximately £15,000. Of 410,000 envelopes sent out only some 37,000 w’ere returned, but these showed the remarkably high average of 8s 4d each. Donations of £lO or more were quite common, and a few of £2O were received, and a very large number oi £5. The largest so far recorded was £SO from Westport. The most outstanding and pleasing result of the appeal was a donation from the Chatham Islands; where envelopes were not sent. The Jockey Club there sponsored an appeal, and so far raised £lO5, representing an average of over 3s a head of the population.
