WARNING GIVEN

SERIOUS THREAT TO AUSTRALIA.

MUST FACE HARD,COLD FACTS

“ENEMY HAMMERING AT GATES.”

United Press Association—Copyright > (Roc. 2.25 a.m.)

MELBOURNE, January 23

In a general statement of the position Mr Forde said that although Australia was facing a more serious threat to-day than ever in its history there must be no form of panic or defeatism but only a firm determination to fight the enemy and throw him back. We might suffer temporary reverses but undoubtedly, with the assistance of our Allies, we will clear the seas and land of the Japanese menace, and win through to victory. Australians must face cold, hard l facts. The enemy was hammering at our gates and endeavouring to gain a foothold with the avowed intention of invading our land. “General To jo (Prime Minister of Japan) said this week that there would be no mercy if we resist. Resist we will and fight back to the utmost of our capacity. We have not been intimidated by Japanese threats nor have we been intimidated by the successes the Japanese have so far gained. The people can play their part steadfastly in carrying on their tasks calmly and carrying out whatever instructions are issued by the Government.”
