HARVEST LABOUR.
RELEASE OF MEN FROM CAMPS. STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER (P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The conditions under which the men may be tempoi'arily released from military duties to assist Avith the harvesting of crops are announced by the Minister of National Service (the Hon. R. Semple). The Minister said that farmers with farm workers affected by the recent mobilisation, who were urgently required for harvesting essential crops and who were not replaceable by other labour, may apply at once to the local manpower committee for temporary release of these men. Provided that the application is supported, where necessary, by the local Primary Production Council and that the State Placement Officer has no other labour available for the purpose, the Manpower Committee, if it deems his return essential, will obtain temporary leave of absence from military units without pay for the worker concerned. Mr Semple also said that if necessary, and providing the military situation permitted of such action, the Government would give consideration to a similar release of men for planting purposes.
