Ashburton Guardian Magna est Veritas et Prævalebit. SATURDAY, JANUARY 24, 1942. THE PATRIOTIC FUND APPEAL.

The appeal that is being made for regular contributions to raise the Ashburton quota of the Patriotic Fund is worthy of the most generous support possible. The fund is used for providing comforts for prisoners of war, men in hospitals, and others on service, as well as for giving assistance to men invalided home to tide them over the period between their discharge from the forces and their set--tlement again in civil life. The probable quota for the Ashburton Borough is £7OOO, and with the menace of war coming closer to New Zealand than ever before there is every reason to expect an increase in the demands rather than a decrease. The men who are called upon for active service have to make sacrifices and endure hardships that are not realised —are not realisable-—by those who remain at home. It is not given to everyone to fill a place in the fighting services. It has been* aptly observed that this fact should induce a feeling of humility among those who remain members of the civil population and are still able to carry on their life and work almost normally. But there is something that they can do something practical. The appeal that is being made furnishes the opportunity for affording practical help in a personal service that should be an incentive to generous response. Some sacrifices may have to be made in many cases, but with the country fighting for its survival as a free nation sacrifice is the lot of all. Fortunate is the man or woman whose only sacrifice is that of personal comfort or enjoyment, some of which at least is within one’s power to regulate. It should be regarded as a privilege, as much as it should be accepted as a duty, to do all possible to furnish such amenities as are practicable and desirable for those who have ventured ail in the defence of our liberty.
