NEW TELEPHONES.
minister explains position. (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Jan. 23. The Postmaster-General (the Hon. - P. O. Webb) said to-night in Wellington that there seemed an impression in some quarters that the recent restriction of new telephone connections was the outcome ol a moie 1 ed-tape decision rather than a lery nccossaiy war-time precaution. Mr Webb said that the quantity oi telephone equipment in the Dominion was not large, and to ensure that stocks would be available for the armed forces in the event of an attack it became necessary to close down completely in the meantime on all new connections not essential to the State in the present emergency. Otherwise, he said, the Government would be guilty of a grave lack ot a sense of responsibility to the people of New Zealand. Mr Webb added that a large quantity of telephone equipment and material was on order, but manufacturing and shipping difficulties' made its arrival irregular. However, the present restrictions would be relaxed when warranted.
