LOOKING BACK.

FIFTY YEARS' SYNE. • t (From the. “Guardian,” Jan. 23, 1892.) The Crops.—At Greensfcreet there.aw some famous wheat-growing fields, and this year they will probably top any previous average for the district. Messrs Henry Hunt, A. Buckley, P. Weldon, J. Hyde, W. Green and D. McKeudry (the latter on the old Greenstreet homestead) have some splendidlooking paddocks of grain. Messrs E l . Church and J. G. Good have some fine paddocks, the latter having Hunter’s white wheat that will probably return fully 45 bushels per acre. Around Springburn and Alford Forest there are numerous small fields of oats showing well for a heavy' crop, Messrs A. Me* Farlane, William T. Smith and Ben Edc having pi-omising paddocks. About Winchmore there are some heavy' yields, and two blocks of Hunter’s wheat on Mr J. S l . Bland’s farm are worth looking at. They go from 40-50 bushels per acre. Messrs McCormick Bios., Capon Bros., and R. Miller all have extra good crops, and the Winchmore estate crop this year is an extensive one, both in acres and bushels. Mr Octavius Digby’s farm, near the bridge, has good crops of wheat and oats. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian,” Jan. 23, 10*17.) Mayfield Stock Yards.—ln connection with the re-opening of the Mayfield saleyards yesterday, it is interesting to note that the first stock sale was held in that district between 13 and 14 years ago, and was conducted by the late Mr David Thomas, whose business Was subsequently purchased by the National Mortgage and Agency Company, Ltd. The first sheep sold at the yards was a fat ewe lamb on behalf of Miss Beatrice Dellow, which realised £l, the highest price in the yards. Yesterday the highest price for lambs was obtained by Mr J. S. Baxter, who received 25s lid per head for a pen of 196 prime fats.
