SUBMARINE ESCAPES.
i DUTCH CRAFT AT TARAKAN. AIR ATTACKS ON MEDAN. (Rec. 1.50 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 21. A Dutch submarine with a damaged engine escaped during the Japanese attack on Tarakan, according to a communique issued by hcadquarteis of the Netherlands East Indies forces at Batavia, which states: “Yesterday afternoon the lightship near Medan wi;s bombed and machine-gunned by three enemy aircraft after an air reconnaissance bad taken place. No damage was done. Later the same afternoon live Japanese aircraft, after having circled over parts of Medan for about half an hour, dropped about nine bombs. Three persons were killed, but the damage to property was small. Enemy aircraft attacked an aerodrome in Borneo, damaging the aircraft station.—British Official Wireless.
