SPEAKER DECLINES.
MOTION IN HOUSE OF COMMONS LONDON, January 20. The Speaker of the House of Commons declined to accept Mr E. L. Granville’s motion on the ground that it did not comply with the standing orders. Mr Granville (National Liberal, Suffolk) had notified Mr Speaker that he would move the adjournment of the House “to discuss the urgent state of affairs in regard to the defence of Singapore and Malaya, and ask for assurances to the people of Britain, Australia, and the Empire that the Government is doing everything possible to defend and secure this vital communication of the British Empire.” Mr Granville said’ that Singapore’s situation was so grave that the House of Commons should take the opportunity at the first sitting aftei Mi Churchill’s return to ask the Govern ment for an assurance that aeroplanes would be sent to Malaya immediately. Singapore itself was likely to he invested in the near future, lie added.
