CONCEALING PLIGHT.
GERMANS SENT TO FRANCE. RESTING FROM RUSSIAN FRONT. (Roc. 11.4;) *.m.) LONDON, Jan. 20. In order that Germans at home may not see the extent to which German soldiers are suffering in Russia, the German High Command is sending a resting battalion to,.France. Many embarked at Riga, from where they are shipped to France. Some are even sent down thd channel to Brest,
The British United 'Press correspondent on the French frontier says there is evidence of the demoralisation of German soldiers, which resulted in the bolstering of French hopes for a German defeat, heightening pro-British sentiment and the growth of the French spirit with active resistance against the Germans. When Royal Air Force planes fly over, hundreds of Frenchmen defy the Germans and rush out into the street to wave and cheer. Recently a British pilot bailed out and lauded in a French coastal town. Before flic German soldiers reached the spot the airman was rushed off to hiding. The Germans arrested scores of people as a reprisal, but the'whereabouts of the flier was not revealed.
