Ashburton Guardian Magna est Veritas et Prævalebit WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 21, 1942 MEMBER FOR MID-CANTERBURY.

The unopposed return of Mrs Grigg as member of Parliament for Mid-Can-terbury will be received with satisfaction by all classes of the community. The fact that there was never any suggestion of a contest, either for the party selection or for return as representative, is in the first place an expression of the personal esteem in which Major Grigg was held by political friend and political opponent alike, and an expression also of appreciation of his self-sacrificing service in the field. But while this is so to a very great degree, the choice of Mrs Grigg, and the unanimous approval of that choice, does not rest on sentimental grounds alone. The electors of Mid-Canterbury know that she is well qualified to discharge the onerous duties that will devolve upon her. Even before Major Grigg left the Dominion she revealed a keen grip of public affairs and since his departure she has attended to the affairs of the constituency —so far as her position allowed her —in a manner not only creditable to herself but also advantageous to the district. Mrs Grigg is the fourth woman to be returned to the House, taking-her seat in similar circumstances to the late Mrs McCombs. She has the honour of being the first woman member on the National side, being also the first to be nominated for selection at the party ballots. With her capacity for public work, Mrs Grigg will be a valuable member not only in the consideration of general political policy but also, particularly, in the presentation of the women’s side of the problems that are dealt with by Parliament. The constituents of MidCanterbury, while deeply regretting the necessity for r a change in representation, .confidently expect that their new member will have a successful term of office. They know that natural talent, coupled with a keen sense of duty, inspired by the memory of Major .£*.?£. 8 conception of the responsibilities and privileges of Parliamentary life, will enable Mrs Grigg to meet all calls made upon her.
