TERRITORIAL SERVICE

FIRST MARRIED MEN.

THOSE WITHOUT CHILDREN. REMAINING SINGLE MEN. ASHBURTON AREA TOTAL 286. The names of 27,104 men called up for territorial service are published in a Gazette extraordinary issued yesterday. . The total includes all married men Without children between the ages of 18 and 46, and all the remaining single men who have not previously been called in any ballot. There are 4211 men from Canterbury. The Gazette states that the list includes a number of men who have volunteered for overseas service, and some already serving in home defence units.

The total from the Ashburton district Is 286. The Minister for National Service (the Hen. R. Semple) announced on January 5 that the men called up would be medically examined immediately after the Gazette had been issued and would be drafted into camp at the earliest possible moment. He added that it was unlikely that the men would be released after the normal three months’ training. The question of how long they would remain mobilised would depend on the gravity of the present war situation.

Mr Semple also announced that if and when further men were required to complete the numbers necessary for the present stage of mobilisation, they would be drawn from married men between the ages of IS and 24 inclusive, irrespective of the number of children.
