THE COMPETITIONS.
TO BE HELD AS USUAL. DECISION OF ANNUAL 'MEETING . The annual meeting of the Ashburton Competitions Society, was held last evening, the president (Mr A. H. Todd) presiding. The balance sheet showed a credit balance of £l9. The president stated that the result of the competitions last year, both from the cultural, artistic and financial point of view, was a eleaj indication of the public need in regard to carrying out the essential work. The committee felt that the experience gained at the competitions was going a long way toward iritproving the minds of the young people by fostering the cultural arts, and encouraging them to play an important part in the community. Apart from this side of the competitions the committee felt it was upholding and encouraging public morale among the competitors and the community in general. The committee was very pleased with the financial result of the competitions and was of the opinion that they should be carried on. With the anticipation of strong support of the Ashburton public the committee had decided to donate the whole of the nett proceeds to the National Patriotic Fund. This help to swell the quota of £7OOO to he raised in Ashburton in 1942.
The election of officers resulted: Patrons, Mrs A. N. Grigg, Dr. J. Connor and Mr S. P. Taylor; presideht, Mr A. IT. Todd; vice-presidents, Mrs A. T. Smith, Mr W. H. Higgins; secretary, Mr J. W. P. Dwyer; treasurer, Mr F. Pritchard; auditor, Mr H. W. Sherratt; lion, solicitor, Mr R. Kennedy; executive, Messrs C. J. McEachen, C. F. Parsons, E. Easterbrook, M. J. Burgess, H. L. Wimsett, L. E. Carter and W. G. Welsh.
