FIRST-AID WORK.

MORE MEMBERS NEEDED. Stretcher drill, under the direction of Mr H. Lane, was continued at the weekly meeting of the First Aid Section of the Emergency Precautions Scheme held at the Fire Brigade Station last evening. The section is divided into parties of four called First Aid parties. The actual work of collecting and bringing in casualties in an emergency will be the work of the parties which will operate from First Aid Posts distributed so as to carry out quick despatch to any place where casualties have occurred. Their duty is to render I* list Aid on the spot and send particulars to the Post or hospital if necessary. The parties will work in conjunction with ambulances and are well supplied with First Aid equipment and stretchers.

Bescue parties, each having fix to eight men, under a skilled foreman, will work in conjunction with the First Aid parties and will undertake tfie more difficult and dangerous task of rescuing people trapped under buildings or debris. So far, the First Aid section of the E.P.S. has been recruited almost entirely from the St. John Ambulance Brigade. Tho roll stands at 25 mouthers, but it was forcibly stated by Mr B. W. Williams, who did similar work in London during the air raids that in a town the size of Ashburton tho absolute minimum? for dealing with an emergency would bo 60 stretcherbearers.

It is hoped that men who are not connected with the Home /Guard or E.P.S. will report immediately to the Borough Council Chambers to be attached to the First Aid Section of the E.P.S.
