DEFENCE IN THE EAST.

CBNERAL WAVELL'S PLANS. (Roe. 2.4 a.m.) ZURICH, October 20. A message from Turin says that General Sir Archibald Wayell is at present busy on defence fortifications extending over almost an unconquerable chain of the Caucasus mountains along the Black Sea Coast to Southern Caucasia to Batum and along the Caspian Sea to Baku. The message adds that General Waved obviously considers possible an Axis frontal attack through the Caeeasus mountains combined with land and sea attacks. The fact has been established that he is transporting large quantities of war material to Northern Iran, Georgia and Azerbaijan.
