FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian” oct9 21, 1891.) Interview at Station The Hon. John Balance went through: to Christchurch by the express last night. At the Ashburton platform he was received by Major Steward, Speaker of the House of Representatives, who, at the .request of the Political Association, introduced him to Mr J. Keir (representing the Ashburton Political Association), Mr J. W. Sawle, Mr R. Alcorn, Mr W. Legget, Mr T .M. Jones Mr H. M. Jones, and Mr G. Mcßae. Swimming Club —The committee of the. Ashburton Swimming Club held their first meeting on Monday evening the captain, Mr Alfred Harrison, in the chair. Great pleasure was expressed at the gift to the club of a challenge cup by the president Mr David Thomas. Mr T. H. McOwen was elected to the vacancy on the committee caused by the resignation of Mr H. H. Stephens, which was received with regret. Mr Peter Williams reported that- arrangements for entertainments on behalf of the culb had been made. ‘ TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO.
