SUMMER SPORTS.

DOMAIN GROUNDS BUSY. CLUBS OPEN SEASONS. Ideal conditions prevailed to-day for the playing of summer sports, and the recreation areas in the Ashburton Domain were busy. Three clubs opened their seasons, cricket competitions were started, and tennis and croquet lawns were fully engaged. Ashburton Bowling Club. There was a good attendance at the official opening of the Ashburton Bowling Club’s season. There were visitors from all over Ashburton, and the Allenton Bowling Club was strongly represented. The president (Mr F. Pritchard) referred to the loss the club had suffered in the deaths of Messrs A. Gregory, T. Wilson and J. Briscoe, three very enthusiastic members. Mr Pritchard spoke of the good condition of the greens, saying they were in much better order than at this time last year. The club had instituted a new form a competition for this season—club fours, distinct from the championship fours. This competition would be made up from graded players and entry would be independent of the championship contests. It was felt that these contests would lead to some very good play. Mrs Pritchard bowled down the first kitty and Mrs E. A. Edmiston sent down the first bowl, which, amid applause, was declared a “toucher.” Friendly matches were played and afternoon tea was served. Te Marae Tennis Club. The Te Marae Tennis Club opened its season. The lawns were in firstclass condition for play,, repaying the attention that has been given to them in the last few weeks. AH the courts were in use throughout the afternoon and some enjoyable games were played. Baseball Matches. Baseball matches for women were seen on the top ground, these being the first of their kind played in Ashburton, and there were numerous interested spectators. Several clubs were engaged in friendly matches, a large number of players being concerned.
