SCOTTISH CONCERT.

FOB PATRIOTIC PURPOSES THE SUM OF £ll3 RAISED. The Radiant Hall was packed last evening when the Master Butcheis War Effort Committee, of Christchurch, in conjunction with the Ashburton County Scottish Society, presented a Scottish concert, the proceeds of which are to be sent to the citizens of Clydeside and other bombed areas of Scotland. This committee which has been conducting weekly community singing in Christchurch since June, lias already raised £IBOO for the fund and its members are to be congratulated on the untiring efforts for this deserving cause. . , , r /n i In the absence of the Mayor (±>r J. Connor), Mr Coles (secretary of the Master Butchers’ War Effort Committee) introduced the members to the audience. Mr Anderson (president) spoke of the self-sacrifice and service due to brotlier-Scots, 12,000 miles from here, and praised the wonderful eltort already made by the people of rso'v Zealand. Charity did not consist only of almsgiving, lie said. The moral support of knowing we were continually thinking of them, helped the bcottish people enormously. The concert presented by the visitors was an outstanding success and throughout the performance the audience was convulsed with laughtci. Mi J. S. Buckler led community .singing, being assisted by Mr J. Bar sons. Alls Buckler was the pianist. Ihe performers were all well-known Christchurch performers, and proved to lie extremely popular with the audience. 1 Songs were given by Miss Marjorie Nelson, the Mc-Lftchlan sisters and -Miss Jovee Chambers. Scottish numbers by Mr George Campbell were enjoyed. Numerous sketches presented by Horry and Rene were received with great mirth, as was a hilarious sketch, entitled “Mum, Poor Mum.” . During the programme a special praver was given for the soldiers overseas and for the people of the Britisn Isles The audience stood and sang “There’ll Always be an England, followed bv the hymn, “Menial bather Stronf- to Save.” The lights were then switched off and everyone offerecl a prayer while Mr Buckler sane; By the J'ireside At the end of the evening, with the inclusion of competitions and auctioning, the total amoupt was £ll3.
