ASHBURTON RIVER CONTROL. STATEMENT BY MINISTER. The completion of the Ashburton river control work is to be proceeded with as quickly as possible, according to advice received by the Ashburton County Council from the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. H. T. Armstrong). “I wish to acknowlege receipt of your letter of September 8, enclosing a, sealed resolution of the Council, unertaking to pay its contribution of £9OOO to the Public Works Department within three months from September 5, 1941, and accepting responsibility for adequate future maintenance of the work,” writes the Minister. “I have been informed that the County Council’s application to raise a loan of £9OOO haS( been sanctioned by the Local Government Loans Board, and instructions have accordingly been issued to the Distfict Engineer to have the work proceeded with as quickly as possible.” The completion of the work will have the effect of giving the people living on the upper reaches of the river full benefit from the scheme prepared by the Public Works Department and adopted by the County Council several years ago.
