FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian,” Sept. 17, 1891) Flemington Factory—Operations at the Flemington cheese and butter factory ceased some time ago, owing to the short supply of milk, caused by ' the high prices now ruling for sheep, which make sheep feeding more profitable than cattle grazing Tor dairy purposes. We learn that the factory, as such, is in the market or soon will be. ‘ Baptist Congregation—The quarterly social meeting of the Ashburton Baptist congregation was held in the Baptist Chapel on Thursday evening, the Rev. Mr Sawle in the fhair. There were between seventy and eighty members and adherents of the church present. Addresses were delivered by the chairman and Messrs Williams, Farquharson, and Colyer. Vocal solos were given by Miss Wildsmith and Mr Farquharson; a Huct by Mr T. and Miss Kingston ; a quartette—“Sweet Chiming Bells,” by Miss Wildsmith, Miss Kingston, Mr T. Kingston and Mr James ; a recitation by Mrs Manhire; and anthems by the choir under Mr Wildsmith. Tea was handed round, after which the meeting closed with the Benediction.

(From the “Guardian,” Sept. 17, 1916) Staveley Dairy Co.—There was a large attendance of shareholders at the annual meeting of the Staveley Co-op-erative Dairy Company on September 11. Mr Hugo Friedlander (Chairman of Directors) presided. At a subsequent meeting of the Board of Directors Mr Hugo Friedlander was reelected chairman and Mr F. W. Ruddenklau vice-chairman. Italy at War—A communique states: “Heavy artillery and trench mortars bombarded the enemy east of Gorzia, on the Carso. The attacks are proceeding satisfactorily and we are extending our possession of the crest of Mount Cauriol.” Soldiers Farewelled—A very successful and enjoyable function, arranged by the Ashburton Catholic community, was held in the Masonic Hall last evening to bid farewell to Messrs J. Blackburn, P. Daly, J. Davison, W. Fitzgerald, J. MeGuinness, and j. Whearty, who are shortly going on active service.
