NATIONAL PARTY

CANDIDATE FOR REMUERA SEAT MR ENDEAN APPROVED. (P.A.) AUCKLAND, September 7. After hearing addresses by the Leader of the Opposition (Mr S. G. Holland) and the Dominion president of the party (Mr Alexander Gordon), on Saturday night, the Remuera Electorate Committee of the New Zealand National Party resolved to confirm officially the candidature of the sitting member, Mr W. P. Endean, at the forthcoming general, election. There was a large attendance at the meeting and the committee accorded Mr Holland and Mr Gordon a unanimous vote of thanks, loyalty and confidence. The decision is regarded as a solution of the difficulties which occurred recently in the electorate. Mr Endean announced early in June that if a general election were held this year he would again be a candidate for the seat. The electorate committee of the National Party under the party’s constitution, called for nominations of intending candidates as a preliminary to holding a postal selection ballot of party members in the electorate. Five nominations were received, but Mr Endean’s name was not submitted and he announced that he in- i tended to stand for the seat as a Na-tional-Independent candidate. The difficulty was submitted to Mr Holland, who stated that Mr Endean would receive his support, and that, of the Parliamentary Party,. thus becoming the official candidate. A postal ballot was taken on whether Mr Endean’s candidature should be approved and the decision was in the affirmative by 676 votes to 563.

THE ROTORUA COMMITTEE. DENIAL OF DISBANDMENT. (P.A.) ROTORUA, September 5. A denial that the National Party electoral committee at Rotorua intended to disband was nfatle by Mr J’. S. Allen, the chairman of the electorate committee, following a' largely attended meeting of delegates at Tirau last evening/ “Our organisation is a permanent one and will continue to operate. Circumstances may have altered the immediate outlook affecting the contest, but our interests go beyond that, as w r e have the principles and welfare of the party to promote. My committee is solidly behind Mr Hoiland, so will adhere to an arrangement made with the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser) not to contest a seat held by a, member serving with the forces. Mr A. Jf. (Vfoncur will have that protection,” stated Mr Alleii.
