AN OLD SCHOOL BUILDING BOROUGH SCHOOL COMMITTEE A request for the use of the old school building at the Borough School fof s medical examinations has been made to the' Canterbury Education Board by the military authorities, according to a letter received from the Board at the monthly meeting of the Borough School Committee last evening. The committee approved of the occupation of the building by the military for the duration of the war, with a request to the Board that its demolition or removal should he immediately proceeded with when the military no longer required it. The chairman (Mr Wi. H. Sarney) stated that.he had conferred with the local lighting Controller (Mr H. G. Kemp). As far as reduced lighting was concerned, the school had nothing to jworry about. At. the time of the flower show it would be necessary to consult .the controller again. The Headmaster (Mr M. J. Leith) reported that the average number on tbe. roll during July was 440.6. The average attendance was 410.34. The present roll-number was 441. It was stated that considering the prevalence of seasonal complaints in the winter months, the, percentage Of attendances was satisfactory. It indicated that an average of 30 children were absent every day. The roll-number was still very satisfactory. The school bad won tbe junior football and basketball events at the recent school tournaments. The headmaster said he had received payment of dental fees from 185* children, and he submitted the names of those who had not paid. "The new system, introduced by the Health Department, of treating children before fees have been paid, is causing a good deal of work in tbe collection of subscriptions and, moreover, it is taking up much time which could be more profitably spent in other ways," he continued. In his report the headmaster mentioned that Miss S. At. Cruickshank has received notice of her transfer to Timai’U West. Ho paid ai tribute to her work in a period of slightly under five years, and the committee passed a resolution expressing regret at Miss Cruickshank’s departure, appreciation of all she has done for the school, and best wishes for happiness in her new position. r The list of pupils who had not paid their dental fees was-left to the chairman and headmaster to deal with. For the visiting committee, Mr W. K. Waters reported on a number of miscellaneous matters. Messrs Wafers and W. G. Welsh were appointed the visiting committee for next month.
