INTOXICATED IN CAR.
FINE OF £SO IMPOSED. (P.A.) AUCKLAND, August 5. “The difficulty in these cases is adequately to punish the man for so serious an offence. Although terms of seven, 10, or 14 days’ imprisonment are being imposed, I consider a good hefty fine is bigger punishment than seven days’ imprisonment,” said the Magistrate, Mr F. K. Hunt, in imposing a fine of £SO upon Charles Arnold Vivian Perry, aged 40, a dealer, for being in a state of intoxication while in charge of a motor-car in Pitt street yesterday. Perry pleaded guilty. The police said that the car struck a young woman at. an intersection yesterday afternoon. Perry stopped and asked the young woman if she was'all right. A doctor later certified that Perry was intoxicated. Defending counsel said that Perry had two whiskies after business and was driving to golf. He stopped and offered to drive the young woman home. Perry was a man of good character, and had never been in trouble.
In addition to the .fine the Magistrate cancelled Perry’s driving licence for 12 months.
