LOOKING BACK.
FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian,” August 6, 1801) Agricultural Education—The Congress convened by Air J. r R. Wilkinson, to consider the question of agricultural v education will meet on Saturday, August 15, .in the Ashburton main school immediately after the arrival of the express from Christchurch. As will bo seen by advcrtisement J _jiot only delegates but also private persons ana ladies interested in educational auvancement are invited to attend. In order to make the Congress more effective its scope has been much extended, as will be seen from tho main proposals, and it would facilitate business if delegates and others intending to be present would have their amendments or motions drawn up before tho meeting begins. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian,” Augusts, 1916) Mcthven School—Owing to tho school building at Alethven having been destroyed by fire, the children have hot been assembled for some days. It is understood that arrangements are being made to accommodate them in one of the Sunday School buildings until such time as a new school is erected. Russian Campaign—General Sakaharoff’s latest attack establishes him on the heights across the Screth and Goraberk rivers, within 11 miles of the main Berlin Lemberg-Odessa railway. A United .Empire—Mr Lloyd George, reviewing Canadian troops, said “When the foe is beginning to become exhausted wo must prepare to pour in troops. Britain’s sons come from the rolling prairies of Canada, the great islands of the southern seas, Africa’s sunny mountains and India’s coral strands. We are federating this great Empire for a greater future of enterprise. As it was before, it will never he again. It will he one great coherent unity, which will do more to mould and direct the destiny of the world than anything in .the past.”
