FIFTY YEARS SYNE. . (From the “Guardian,” Aug. 5, 1891). Tea Meeting—The annual tea meeting of the Ashburton Presbyterian Church is fixed to take place in . the Oddfellows’ Hall on Tuesday, September 5. Arrangements have been made for a visit to Ashburton by the Rev. Dr. Stuart, of Knox Cnureli, Dunedin, lor this anniversary of the Ashburton Presbyterian Church, and he will conduct the services on Sunday, September 0. Federation Question —Sydney: The “Sydney Morning ’.Herald” says Mr Ballance’s opposition to federation is apparently founded on inability or unwillingness to recognise any connection between the interests of New Zealand and the other Australian colonies. \ ’ t TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian,” Aug. 5, 1916). High School Football —The football match between Waitaki 1 High School Second XV and Ashburton High School senior team, played on the Domain football ground this morning, resulted in an easy win for the visitors by 20 points to nil. f Anniversary of War —There was a fairly large congregation at the Baring Square Methodist Church last evening, the occasion being a united service in connection with the anniversary of the declaration of war. The service was arranged by the Ministers’ Association. The ministers present were: Rev. Messrs iG. Miller, J. D. McArthur, B. Jarvis, F. Oldnfeve, W. C. Blair, and Adjutant E. L. Wain. His Worship the Mayor (Mr R. Galbraith) and members of the Borough Council were also present. The address was given by the Rev. W. Blair, who dealt in a comprehensive manner with the events of the two years of war. Appropriate hymns were sung. ; • -I
