ST. JAMES THEATRE. “BROADWAY MELODY OF 1940.’ “Broadway Melody,” starring Fred Astire and Eleanor Powell, world's greatest dancers will be screened again to-night and finally to-morrow at 2 and 8 p.m. Fred Astaire s presence in any film is a guarantee of cleverness and jollity, and in this instance he is at the top of his form. Eleanor Powell is the partner Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer has found fo'r him. She dances with enormous spirit, precision, and speed. Georgs Murphy combines excellent dancing with attractive acting. Frank Morgan plays an uproariously funny part as a man who becomes inarticulate under the stress of excitement, and lan Hunter is the junior partner in the theatrical concern which launches Astaire, Powell, and Murphy, together with a miscellany of jugglers and singers. Cole Porter wrote the vividly adroit songs, which include the beguiling “Begin the Beguine.” The whole production has been brilliantly decorated and produced on the grandest scale. CARD PARTY AND DANCE. The sum of £1 was raised at a card party and dance held in aid of the Lowcliffe-Coldstream Red Cross funds recently. Winners at cards were Mr E. S. Barnes and Mrs D. Dutton. A competition was won by Mr H. White.
