AN ANZAC CORPS.

MR COATES URGES FORMATION AN ANGLE FROM AMERICA. (P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The importance of the call for an Anzac Corps was put in a new perspective to-day when the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates returned to Wellington from his recent visit to the United States. The people of the United States, he said, knew a lot about the Anzacs, but many of them did not think in terms of Australia and New Zealand. Referring to the American attitude to the European conflict, Mr Coates said that east of the Mississippi the outlook of the people was similar to our own. The isolationists had a bigger say in the Middle West, however, but that attitude had been altered to a large extent by the Japanese action, which tended to unify public opinion and break down barriers.

Commenting on the need for the establishment of a New Zealand Legation in Washington, Mr Coates said that this was a matter requiring urgent attention. The appointment of a New Zealand representative there was inevitable and Mr Coates said he had made representations to Mr Fraser and Mr Nash, giving them his views on the subject.
