FIFT.Y YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian,” Aug. 4, 1891). “Outcast London”—Bishop Julius last evening delivered his lecture on “Outcast London” in the Oddfellows’ Hall, to a crowded audience. As it would lie unfair to his Lordship, who delivers this lecture and others occasionally in different p irts of his diocese in aid of church funds and charitable objects, to give even an outline of his lecture, and so forestall him when he chooses to deliver his lecture in another district, we refrain from going into details. Suffice. it to say that it was given with all the power which his Lordship is well-known to possess, the raciness and humour which characterise most of his utterances on the platform, and was full of well-told anecdote and superb word painting. It is seldom that the people of Ashburton have an opportunity to listen to a lecturer of the Bishop’s ability, and all who were absent missed a treat. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian,” Aug. 4, 1916). Two Years’ War —A high authority, reviewing the results of two years of war, states: “The Allies occupy 1,071,000 square miles against the Central Powers’ 167,000. The initiative is in our hands on all fronts since the Verdun failure. Even in Mesopotamia we control the Sha tel-Arab (Euphrates River) .and the Irak Province, and the German influence in South Persia has been eliminated. General Smuts is making progress and the Serbs are presenting a formidable front to the Bulgarians. We have ample munitions for ourselves and our Allies. Over 5,040,000 Britons have voluntarily enlisted, and the whole of our manhood is now in the service of the nation, in addition to the men from the Dominions and India.” Air Raid—Londoh: Six airships raided Norfolk, Sussex and Essex. Eighty bombs wore dropped, but did little ‘damage.
