CHAIN OF CIGARETTES.
AUSTRALIAN PRISONERS OF WAR BEIRUT; July 20. Australian soldiers in a Vichy prison camp in Syria kept a chain of cigarettes alight all the time they were in prison because they had no matches. The prisoners were able to get plenty of local cigarettes, but their guards refused them matches. The men were quartered in small whitewashed huts. Although overcrowded, they were generally well treated. They had to sweep out the huts each day and prepare their own meals.
After that they were free to do as hey liked—ywithin reason.
