FIGHTING SPIRIT.

RECRUITS FOR OVERSEAS FORCE NORTHERN MAORIS ENROL. (P.A.) WHANGAREI, This Day, An inspiring incident indicating that the lighting,.spirit still animates the Ngapuhi occurred at a tribal meeting in Northern Hokianga yesterday. A Maori recruiting officer paid a visit to Panguru, where a large assemblage of Ngapuhi had gathered. An old chief, descendant of warriors of the early days, spoke of the valour shown by the Maoris in the present war and expressed the opinion that nothing in the shape of conscription would be needed to maintain the Maori Battafion. This faith was borne out when a queue was formed and every youth at the gathering signed up, those of military age' for service overseas, and (ho younger ones for Territorial service.
