AIR RAID IN ARCTIC.
NAVAL CRAFT BOMB SHIPPING. HIT ON A GERMAN WARSHIP LONDON, July 31. British naval aircraft have successfully attacked German shipping, in the Arctic ports of Kirkenes and Petsamo. At Kirkenes, two hits were scored on a German warship, and four supply ships were hit. Three Messerschmitts and a Junkers were shot down. At Petsamo, little- shipping was found and the attack was direced against port installations. Opposition was encountered from anti-aircraft fire and fighters. A jetty was hit and warehouses and oil tanks were set on fire.
At Kirkenes, strong opposition made full observation of the results impossible. The warship hit was a vessel of 1460 tons, and was armed with six 3.5 inch guns. She was a gunnery training ship before the war.
Sixteen aircraft are missing from these attacks.
The German radio stated that under an escort of fighters, British torpedocarrying aeroplanes, taking off from an aircraft carrier in the Arctic, attacked a port in the north of Norway. The attack coincided with a raid by Russian aeroplanes on the north of Norway.
