DAMAGE TO TREES.

IN COUNTY PLANTATIONS. CONTROL TO BE TIGHTENED. “From time to time consideration is given by the Council to reports of damage to young trees in plantations, illicit grazing and deficient fencing, which#indicates that our system of eon- * trol is not satisfactory, and that unnecessary financial loss is being suf(,Mr S. P. Taylor) at the meeting of the Ashburton County Council this morning. “With a staff of water-race rangers covering all portions of the County, it seems- to me that supervision and coutrol of plantations should not be difficult. A repetition of past losses could be obviated if lists of the plantations (were given to the rangers, with instructions for a monthly inspection of each area. A monthly report should be made showing a list of reserves inspected with a note of any attention which might be necessary.” Members agreed with the statement made by the chairman, and in reply to a question, Mr Taylor said it was a fact that the placing of gates in the fences of plantations led to a. good deal of trouble. It was agreed that control of the reserves and plantations should be tightened.
