SOCIAL SECURITY.

THE STATE X-RAY SERVICE. (P.A.) WELLINGTON, July 30. Referring to the Social Security Scheme in the House of Representatives to-night, the Hon. A. H. Nordmeyer announced that the free X-ray service would come into operation on Monday, August 11. The scheme would apply to public hospitals and some private X-ray plants in various parts of the Dominion. The Minister also outlined the outpatients benefits system which had come into force during the last year, as well as the pharmacy benefits scheme and added that £600,000 was being provided this year to cover the estimated cost of paying doctors for services which it was hoped they would render to the public in the implementation of the Government’s pledge of free medical services.

Answering an Opposition interjection asking why hospital hoard rates had not been reduced, Mr Nordmeyer said there were a number of reasons among which was the fact that hospital boards had had to lay in considerable supplies of drugs and other equipment at increased cost on account of the war conditions.
