ALLEGED PAYMENT.
AGAIN DENIED BY MR HOLLAND. (P.A.) WELLINGTON, July 30. In the House to-night, Mr J. O’Brien (Labour, Westland), referred to the allegation made previously that the Leader of the Opposition received £IOOO a year plus £650 travelling expenses. Mr Holland: The statement is not true. There is not a little truth in it. Mr O’Brien said .he would accept Mr Holland’s “words, but there must be quite a number of gentleman 7 who were not speaking the truth if what he said was untrue. Continuing, he also said that it had been stated that speakers from Mr Holland’s party, received two guineas a day. Mr Holland: Wrong again. Mr O’Brien contended that every newspaper in New Zealand should be licensed, and also that at the stage when a newspaper worked against the interests of the people of New Zealand that its licence should be cancelled. Mr W. J. Broadfoot (National, Waitomo): You mean against the Government? Mr O’Brien: I mean when any paper tried to bring conditions into the country that were not in the interests of the whole of the people of the country, the Goovernment should have the right to withdraw the licence. I think that will be done some day.
