FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian,” July 31, 1891). At Chertsey—A very successful entertainment was given in the Chertsey Schoolroom on Friday evening, July 24. in aid of the Sunday School prize fund. The Rev. J. P. Riddle presided and after a few opening remarks introduced the performers. Songs were conducted by Misses Bruce, Todd (2), Gardiner, and Mr Clark; recitations by Mrs Clark and Miss Langford; and two humorous Scottish pieces by Mr Grant were received with rounds, of applause. Recitations and dialogues were given by the following members of the Sunday-School in a very creditable manner: Sarah and Maggie McDowell ; Lorenza, Kate and Edith Dunstau ; Edward, Walter and Edgar l>unstan; John and George MdDowell; and W. Cadman. During the interval a bountiful supply of refreshments was handed round by the following ladies who had kindly provided the same:Mesdames Wells, Scarlett, McDowell and Dunstan and Misses Doig (2). At the conclusion Mr McDowell called for thanks to all who, in one way or another, had assisted to make the g'at-h----eringji success. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian,” July 31, 1916). Rakaia Red Cross—The* annual meeting of the Rakaia branch of the Red Cross Society was held 1 in. St. Mark’s Schoolroom on July 2. There was a record attendance, over 60 members being present. The president (Mrs Boag) occupied the chair. The treasurer (Mrs W. T. Todd) read the bal-ance-sheet for the year, which showed that the receipts had totalled £565, and that there was a balance in hand of £36. The amount spent in material for garments was £177, in wool £4O, in bandage materials £IOO. A special collection of money and clothing had been taken up in June for the widows and orphans of the sailors lost in the Jutland battle, the result being £2B 10s 3d and 206 garments.
