RUGBY FOOTBALL.

JUNIOR GRADE. Technical Old Boys and Celtic played probably the hardest match ot any grade this season when they competed in the game which decided the junior competition. Technical won by 0-0, thereby going into the lead for the' championship by three points. G. Baynes qpd K. Shearer scored for Technical.

N. OTAGO BEATS S. CANTERBURY.

North Otago beat South Canterbury at Oaniaru on Saturday, by 11 points to 4, after an interesting and exciting match. The forwards were evemy matched, and the backs of both teams threw the ball about. The tackling oi the home side, however, was more efficient. Robertson, McJione, .and K ■ Hodge scored for North Otago and Hammill converted one. For South Canterbury 'Morrison kicked a held goal.

Rugby matches at Christchurch on Saturday resulted :—First section : Army 14, New Brighton 12 ; Technical 18, University 12; Air Force 22, Linwood 6. Second section: Albion -2, Southern 12; Athletic 6, Sunnyside t»; Merivalc 19, Christchurch 3; Wigram 30, Godley Head 8. Competition points are now as lollows:—First section : Air Force, Army, New Brighton, and Technical 3, University 1, Linwood 0. OTAGO DEFEATS SOUTHLAND

(P.A.) INVERCARGILL, July 27. In dull, overcast weather, the Otago Rugby team vesterday beat Southland by 6 points to 3. The ground was sodden and heavy and soon became a sea of mud, making the 'ball difficult to handle. The Southland forwards were superior to their opponents, but the Otago backs enjoyed a definite superiority. However, conditions were against back play.

N.Z. TEAM WINS IN SUAV.

SUVA, July 26. A New Zealand Rugby football team defeated a representative European team by 32 points to 9-. Points for New Zealand were scored .by O’Connor (10), Hooper (4). Chester (3), Gable (3), Ensor (6), Clothier (3), and Brimble (3).
