ST. JAMES THEATRE. “GOLDEN BOY.” Unquestionably unique in treatment and theme, “Golden Boy” will be shown to-night and Thursday at R p.m. Starring Barbara Stanwyck, William Holden and Adolphe Menjou, the film is based on Clifford Odets’ romantic drama. “Golden Boy” tells of a young violinist, impatient and tired of working toward the day when he will bo a success on the concert stage, who rapidly fights his way to the top in the prize-ring. In his swift climb to pugilistic stardom, he ruthlessly tramples upon the hopes of his musicloving father, ignores the cryings-ouc of his own conscience. He becomes brutalised by his new environment, until his love for a disillusioned young

woman —the only person who really understands the tremendous conflict raging within him —causes him to give up the ring and return, to tho forgiveness of his family. Under Reuben Mamoulian’s direction, Odets’ stage success becomes vibrant film material. “Golden Boy” is proof again that tlie affairs of everyday people is a fertile source excitement on the screen.

CARD PARTY AT EIFfELTON. The fortnightly card party organised by the Eiffelton Soldiers’ Comfort Committee attracted a splendid attendance on Friday night, when 500 and euchro were played. Winners in the 500 games were Mrs J. Whearty and Mr W. Armstrong, while in the'euchre Mrs J. McQuilkin and Mr R, 'Quinn were successful.
