HEAVIEST FROST.
GROUND READING 10.4 DEGREES The heaviest frost registered in tho screen so far this winter was recorded at the Ashburton Domain weather station last night. The screen reading was 5.8 after 4.4 and 4.5 degrees on tho preceding two nights. The ground frost last night was 10.4 degrees.
The weather to-day was sunny in the morning and about noon the sky clouded over slightly but the sun continued to shine. The atmosphere, however, was cool.
The maximum and minimum temperatures for tho 24 hours up to 9 o’clock this morning were 49.7 and 2G.2 degrees respectively, while the readings for tho previous period were 47.0 and 27.6 degrees. The barometer read 29.85 inches today, compared with 29.92 inches at the same time yesterday.

Tho forecast for tho east coast of tho South Island from Blenheim to Oamaru is as follows: Northerly to north-westerly winds soon prevailing and freshening. Light rain developing in the Alps; fair on the plains. A moderate frost to-night, hut rising day temperatures. Seas moderate.
