ST. JAMES THEATRE. “THE HOUSE OF SEVEN GABLES.” Some of the most amazing characters in all fiction surge to thrilling life in “The House of the Seven Gables” which will bo presented finally tonight. The cast of this screen dramatisation of Hawthorne’s hovel includes George Sanders, Margaret Lindsay, Vincent Price, Nan Grey and Dick Foran.

Thrills, excitement, suspense, comedy, music, such are the entertaining ingredients in this week’s double fea--ture programme showing Thursday and Friday at 7.45 p.m. and also at the matinee at 2 p.m.-,on Friday. “The Lone Wolf Meets a Lady,” Columbia’s newest addition to the thrilling Lone Wolf series, has Warren William again portraying thej- light-fingered, lighthearted rogue. Jean Muir is the lady in the case and supplies the romantic touch without which no adventure of - the debonair adventurer, who laughs , at love and locksmiths, would be complete. Eric Blore, Victor .Tory, Warren ' Hull and Roger Pryor head the supporting cast. Out of the riclx store of tales which Zane Grey wrote about, the old west, Paramount has selected his “Knights of the Range” as a suitable vehicle for the talents of Russell “Lucky” Hayden, Victor Jory, Jean Parker, J. Farrell MacDonald and Britt "Wood. Moviegoers will witness a rip-roaring tale of gunplay and romance, highlighted by thrilling chases, desperate encounters, gay fiestas and the singing and playing of Britt Wood and The King’s Men. SCOTTISH INGLESIDE. There was a large attendance at tile Ashburton County Scottish Society’s Ingleside last evening, When an attractive programme of items were, presented. Chief T. McGregor presided and extended a welcome to new members.

The programme was as follows: Highland fiing, and sword dance, Miss M. Dobson; > songs, Mrs E. G. Craighead, Misses' Beatty and McNicol, Messrs. K. Perry and I. Street ; instrumental trios, Air McEachen and Misses I. John and L. Willoughby ; Irish jig. Master ,T. Rodgers; bagpipe solo, Mr G. Robertson; Miss R. Watts; tap duo, Misses Dailey and L. -Brassctt. The accompaniments were played by Mrs H. J. Chapman and Airs Street.

The thanks of the Society was expressed to the performers by Chieftain H. .AleConochie. A dance followed the musical programme, music being supplied by Mrs Alitchell’s orchestra. Messrs Tate and G. Chilton were Al.C.’s.

DANCES AND CARDS AT HINDS. The Hinds Ladies’ Hockey Club held a successful and enjoyable dance in the Centennial Hall. Airs E. Andrews and Air J. Whiting woii a Atonic Carlo waltz. Alusie was provided by Dabourn’s orchestra, and Air S. Loire was Master of Ceremonies. , At the fortnightly card party held by the Hinds Sub-Branch of the Red Cross Society prizes wore won by Alisa M. Bell and Mr R. Aloffat-. There was a large attendance at the dance, following the Patriotic Commit-, tee’s effort on Saturday. Aliss P, Williams and Afr S. Alaclntosh won a Alonte Carlo. Music was provided by Mrs Alitchell’s orchestra, and Air S. Lowe was Alaster of Ceremonies. . .
