“UNDERGROUND SLUM”
BOMB SHELTER CONDITIONS. . LONDON, April IG. A public air raid shelter in the provinces was described by Lord Hordor os an “underground slum.” In it there are aged and infirm people who have not been outside for four months. Lord Horder made this disclosure when adressing the Royal Empire Society in London. He said he had also seen some public shelters in the provinces where children had remained for a month without coming out. The “underground slum,’’ he sairj, was causing so much anxiety to the Regional Commissioner that he was seriously considering whether he would not, advise the Ministries concerned to compulsorily evacuate children from it.
