NEW WAR AIRCRAFT.

PRODUCTION (N AUSTRALIA.

POSSIBILITY SUGGESTED.

LONDON, May 9

Plans to make in Australia two of. Britain’s most successful types of war aircraft—the Manchester bomber and the Beau fighter—may be recommended to Canberra as,the outcome of investigations by the technical expert who accompanied the Australian Prime Minister, Mr Menzies, to Britain.

Evidence indicates that production could be achieved in Australia without prolonged preliminary ’organisation. For example, the organisation at present producing Beaufort bombers could easily be extended to produce Beau fighters which are two-engined fighters with a. longer range than Spitfires and Hurricanes and hence more suitable for Australian conditions. They have given good results here. The Manchester . bomber is among the four new Royal Air Force bombers which have already justified themselves. They have only recently gone into action and their success was immediate and unqualified. Pilots like them. They take enormous bomb-loads, and are faster than the older types.
