WOMEN’S INSTITUTES.

MEETING AT MOUNT SOMERS. The monthly meeting of the Mount Somers Women’s Institute was presided over by the president (Mrs L. H. Ruddock). A vote of sympathy was passed with Mrs J. Qnnntoek and Mrs I. F. Poncho in their bereavements and Mrs J. Hood in her illness. • * ; Mrs Ruddock gave an interesting pioneer talk and Miss D. M. Petrie spoke on New Zealand authors. Results of competitions were: —Prettiest teapot : Mrs H. Alexander 1. Mrs A. R. Berkley 2. Carrot: Mrs G. Green 1, Miss D. Wightmnn 2. Tomato sauce: Mrs R . J. Whiting 1, Mrs L. Tinker 2, Mrs A. R. ASHTGN'WATERTON BRANCH. There was n largo attendance, at the May meeting of the Ashton-Waterton Women’s Institute. The roll call was “A Winter Cake llecipe.” An invitation was received to the Lowcliffe Institute birthday on May 31. A donation was received for comforts for soldiers leaving the district. Wool for balaclavas and mittens was distributed. A large number of peggy squares were joined together for a qujlt for the Hospital. The competitions resulted :—Chrysanthemums, Miss Wotten 1, Miss Page 2;' scones. Miss Wotten 1, Miss Sliimmin 2; hot water bag cover, Miss Shimmin 1, Mrs Sutherland 2.
