CATERER FINED.

GLASSES NOT PROPERLY WASHED At the Christchurch Magistrate’s Court yesterday, before Mr H. A. Young, J5.M., P. Burke and Company, caterers, were prosecuted for failing to wash*beer glasses thoroughly as required by the regulations under the .Sale of Food and Drugs Act. Mr A. W. Brown appeared for the Crown, and Mr F. W. Johnston for the defendant company, pleading guilty. Mr Brown said that under the relevant regulation “all traces of food must be removed and the glasses then rinsed in clean hot water.” On Boxing Day, at the Ashburton races, Burke’s were in charge of the catering and the bars. There was one bar in the main stand, with hot and cold water laid on, and another, 30 yards away, with no hot water, so that the facilities were not the best; nevertheless, the fault was not entirely with the equipment, as even where hot water was available, cold water was used Defendants knew the regulations perpectly as they had previously been prosecuted at Cheviot, Mr Brown said. Mr Johnston said that one stout glass would discolour a lot of water, and that could explain the inspector having found the water dirty. As for the use of hot water, it was a very hot day, and the customers had complained when offered warm glasses to drink beer out of. He produced a letter from the Ashburton Trotting Club saying that improvements were being effected >n the buildings. “I fined them £2 last time. It will be £4 this time,” said the Magistrate.
