INCIDENT YESTERDAY * MORNING

In the Police Court- this morning, John Gordon Jackson, a carpenter and joiner, of 154 Alford Forest Road Ashburton, was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence! within six months if called upon, on a charge that he did yesterday morning without colour of right, but not so as to be guilty of the theft thereof, convert to his own use a man’s bicycle, valued at £7 ]os, the property of lan Sydney Alexander Stevenson. Messrs E. C. Bathurst and E. H. Orr, Justices of the Peace, were on the Bench. Senior-Sergeant J.» F'. . Oleary saul that Stevenson had put his bicycle in this stand at the Havelock Street corner in East Street at about 9.30 on Tuesday evening. About four hours later he returned to look for a woman’ > bicycle, which he 'could not find. He looked for a policeman but could not find one and whein he returned he found accused making off with his bicycle around .Baring Square and along Victoria Street. Accused had no authority to take the cycle.' Constable T. Harris said that accused told him he had borrowed the bicycle for a flew minutes. He was not suffering from the effects of liquor. Jackson said he was going to Grey Street to see if his wife and children had gone home from a friend’s place He noticed several cycles in the stand and he simply borrowed one for a lew minutes.

The Senior-Sergeant said that accused had been locked up all day yesterday. He had torn up the pillow and mattress in his cell. Mr Bathurst said that in view of the seriousness of converting bicycles left in all good faith in certain parts of the town, there should.be some deterrent but as accused had spent some time in the cell and had his family to support the Bench would convict him and order him to come up for sentence within six months if called upon.
