FINE RESCUE AT SEA.
CRUISER AUSTRALIA. AIRCRAFT DOWN IN GALE. LONDON, November 15. H.M.A.S. Australia has not been idle while H.M.A.S. Sydney has been winning battle laurels in the Mediterranean, reports a special correspondent of the Australian Associated Press. Her latest feat is the rescue of members of the crew of a flying-boat which was forced down hundreds of miles from land in one of the worst gales in living memory. The flying-boat’s fuel gave out and the pilot made a forced descent, in a 50ft swell. This is described as an almost incredible feat. The Australia located the flying-boat by “homing’’ on signals which the flying-boat managed to send out at intervals. The flying-boat remained afloat for 10 hours, and sank as the cruiser came in sight. Several of the crew were pulled out of the water, but after a further hour’s search no trace was found of the remainder. Two or three senior officers of the Australia dived into the raging seas to help in the rescue work, and scores of ratings had to be restrained from following them. The sea was teo rough for the launching of boats.
