THE STAVELEY MEETING. The November meeting of the Staveley Institute was held on Wednesday afternoon. The president (Mrs W. Norman) presided over a very good attendance.

In the absence of the secretary and assistant-secretary, Mrs G. L. Bufton acted as secretary.

The motto was, “Life’s a garden, and every thought a seed.” The roll-call, “My idea of thrift,” was productive of many original suggestions. Arrangements for tho annual children’s Christmas party were discussed. It was decided to donate 10s to the Children’s Health Camp Fund.

Several members volunteered to take children of men on active service for the holidays under the holiday scheme inaugurated by the Federation of Women’s Institutes. It was decided to hold a Paddy’s Market in January, in conjunction with the Patriotic Committee, for patriotic funds, and in preparation for the event a gift afternoon will be held at the January meeting of the Institute.

A plant exchange was conducted. It was decided to divide the flower competition into three sections in fu-, ture, viz., bloom, spike and truss. Competitions were won as follow: Bloom, Mrs W. Norman 1, Mrs Totty 2, Mrs Russell 3; spike, Mrs G. Bufton 1, Miss H. Fittock 2, Mrs L. Bansgrove 3; truss, Mrs A. Wright 1, Mrs L. Hicks 2; child’s cotton frock, Mrs L. Hicks 1, Mrs R. Noll 2, Mrs L. Bansgrove 3. ACTIVITIES AT ALLENTON.

There was a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Allenton Women’s Institute, held l in the sports pavilion. The president (Mrs A. Black) presided.

The aspirations teere read by Mrs G Knox.

The motto was: “Ne-ver he too busy to help a friend.” The financial statement showed a satisfactory credit balance. Jt was decided to donate £1 Is to the Health Camp Committee. Memhbrs expressed willingness to help with the variety stall in the patriotic street fair.

Final arrangements were made for the group meeting to be held in the Hampstead Hall next Wednesday. It was decided to hold the" next meeting oni Monday, December 9. Mrs Black thanked Mfrs W. Hopwood, of Tinwald, for an interesting demonstration on, Chinese lacquer. Competitions resulted.:—Bloom, Miss Upton 1, Mrs" Bari* 2, Mrs Ede 3; savouries, Mrs L. A. Walker 1, Mrs H. Greaves 2, Miss Upton 3: sweet peas, Mrs Storey 1, Mrs McNatty 2, Mrs Hale 3: Christmas novelty, Mrs Stevens 1, Miss Bonningtom 2, Mrs Hosking and Mrs Hale (equal) 3. _ The hostesses were Mesdames Collins, Clucas, Moodie, Wendleborn, and Miss McDowell. THE MARONAN MEETING. The November meeting of the Moron an Women’s Institute was held in the hall. In- the absence of the president (Mrs G. Scales) Mrs L. Galletly presided over a good attendance. One new member was welcomed. The motto for the month was “United we stand, divided we fall.” It was decided to combine with, the Sunday School in a picnic in the Tinwald Domain on Saturday. Miss Gilmore read an interesting report on the half-yearly meeting of the Federation 1 , for which she was accorded a vote of thanks.

The secretary was asked to send a letter of cheer to the president in her illness. ~

Mrs Arker and Miss Gilmore accompanied the singing. The competitions resulted:—Christmas gift: Mrs J. Davidson 1, Miss B. Davidson 2, Mrs E. Rhodes and 1 Miss P. Galletly (equal) 3.
