GRAIN! AND PRODUCE.

SOUTH CANTERBURY MARKET. *£ :• . . TIMARU, This' Dby. ' The season in South Canterbury lhas been a particularly good one for farmers, who have hadi conditions to their liking for the sowing of all types of crops. . Before the recent rain, late sown-crops in some parts were turning yellow, but they have taken on a new lease of life, and the(te is every indication of a. splendid harvest. In some districts, particularly in North Canterbury, owing to bad weather; in the winter, farmers were handicapped yith the sowing of wheat, but the ,same* position did not obtain hero. ‘ 'Actually the acreage in wheat exceeds that of last season and this

may prone beneficial in. view of the anticipated decline in Australian crops. It is presumed that farmers will deceive the same price as last season. November was nominated as the last month in which the Wheat Board would accept milling wheat in order that returns could bo completed 1 and the final bonus paid out at the end of the year or early next year. The recent rains have improved prospects for the oat crops. Early in the season there were inquiries for forward oats, but interest at the moment is not marked. Very few lines of Cartons are availfthto and good prices are being offered for suitable lines. The nominal quotation for A’s is 4s on trucks, with B’s at 3s 9d. Duns are quoted at 4s Gd on trucks, but the demand is poor. Except for the local demand, there is little interest in chaff, the nominal quotation for which is £4 los 6d on trucks.' •’ffhe demand from overseas has been disappointing, and as a. result a fair quantity of No. 1 grade is still held. The nominal quotation is 6s 6d on trucks. A little business has been done, in forward potatoes at £3 los on, trucks, Last year: xip to £5 5s was being paid for forward delivery, owing in large measure to the drought conditions. New potatoes are offering very freely in theL North. 1 Island at much lower prices than last season. It was anticipated that perhaps Government orders would have some effect on the seeds market, hut actually the market has not responded owing no doubt to the fact that seeds have been higher this season than for a number of years past. IPrfesent prices are Pedigree ryegrass, 24s a bushel; mother .ryegrass, 14s 6d a bushel; commercial, 12s 6d; white clover, 2s. 8d per lb; Montgomery, 3s Id per lb; cowgi’ass (machine dressed), Is Id, Italian ryegrass (machine dressed). 8s per bushel.. There has been a demand from Australia for Italian and cowgrass, and some business has been done.
