AMERICAN PUBLIC OPINION.

American opinion willstomach no appeasement, says the “Christian Science Monitor.” It will desire to maintain a firm attitude in the Far East. But it does not regard Japan as the principal threat to world order to-day. It does not wish to become embroiled in the Far East. Americans are far more interested in the great struggle in Europe. They know that once the Nazi threat is quelled and Britain free to protect her own interests in the Far East, the safeguarding of American interests will be much simpler. Everywhere that American statesmanship looks it comes back to this fact—its own interests can be best promoted by aiding Britain. The United States will not be without a powerful friend while Britain stands. There will be no possibility of Japan combining with the Nazis to attack the United States while British sea power guards the Atlantic. And if Americans centre on essentials now, a condition may. be restored in which they will have an opportunity to help Japan work out her difficult economic problem—-by economic, not military means.
